EU cross-border transport rules extend to vans July the 1st!
From the 1st of July 2026, vans that weigh between 2.5t – 3.5t that are engaged in cross-border transport will need to follow key EU Mobility Rules. Including those towing trailers over 2.5t total train weight.
It presents three main obligations that include:
- Installation and use of tachographs
- Applications of EU driving and rest time
- Application of rules on the posting of drivers in relevant operations
The rules apply to operators that carry out cross-border transport operations. Operators must adjust routes, schedules and driver management to comply with driving and rest time requirements. To ensure this, it is mandatory that second-generation smart tachograph installed (G2V2). Companies must manage tachograph data, adhere to driver posting rules for international operations, and register journeys via the EU Road Transport Posting Declaration Portal. This applies to EU and non-EU drivers employed by EU companies. If you are employed by an operator established in one EU Member State and sent to work temporarily to another Member State to perform certain types of transport operations, you are considered a posted driver under EU law.
The maximum daily driving time is 9 hours but can be extended to 10 hours but not more than twice during a week. One week driving limit it 56 hours and two consecutive weeks is a maximum of 90 hours. Minimum break time is 45 minutes after 4.5 hours of driving but it can be split into a 15 minute + 30 minute break. You must be able to have 11 hours of uninterrupted rest time that can be split as long as there is 9 hours uninterrupted. Regular daily rest should be at least 45 hours of uninterrupted rest time weekly. Reduced rest time is at least 24 hours of uninterrupted rest time weekly that should be compensated later.
